About Gatsby

The Gatsby carries on a legacy of tailoring and craftsmanship that spans a period of over a hundred years. It began as a spin-off of Joonus Sait and Sons, started in 1905 in Georgetown, Madras (Flower Bazaar), then the commercial center of the city.

Rafiq Sait, the founder of Gatsby, decided to expand the family business by starting the first Raymond Shop on Mount Road in 1977. In 1986, he then went on to open the Raymond Shop Nungambakkam (now the anchor of Gatsby Collection Pvt. Ltd.), on a quiet and subdued Khader Nawaz Khan Road. The affluent neighbourhood soon showed its colours as the fashion centre of the city, and ensured that the store grew to be one of the largest Raymond Shops in the country. The elite clientele of the store demanded a higher-end product, and to fill this void in the Raymond range, Rafiq Sait started Gatsby in 1991.

Gatsby began by offering Italian cut suits from Givo, modern apparel from Giovani, and some of the best fabrics the country had to offer. With the liberalization of markets came more freedom in the import of goods, and soon, Rafiq Sait, being the fabric aficionado that he is, began to search the globe for fabrics of the kind that India had never seen before. In time, Gatsby, along with the Raymond range, could offer a magnificent collection of truly exclusive fabrics to its most discerning clientele. To better work with these fine fabrics, Gatsby upgraded its tailoring unit from the cottage industry level to state-of-the-art.

Today, Gatsby features in its stores (Nungambakkam and Neelangarai) the largest Vitale Barberis Canonico collection in the country - the complete range of Raymond fabrics, known as the Linen Club. Also featured in the stores are world-class ready-made apparel from Manzoni, Giovani and Givo.
